Few passenger cars are as iconic, or as fondly remembered, as Amtrak’s Pacific Parlour Cars. Reserved exclusively for first-class passengers on the Coast Starlight, these rebuilt Hi-Level lounge cars offered an experience unlike anything else in modern Amtrak service, combining classic rail travel ambiance with West Coast scenery and hospitality. For decades, the Pacific Parlour Cars were a defining feature of Amtrak’s premier long-distance train until their retirement in 2018.

Prototype Background
Originally built by Budd as Santa Fe Hi-Level lounge cars, these cars were later rebuilt by Amtrak into the Pacific Parlour Cars for exclusive use on the Coast Starlight. Featuring lounge seating, a small theater area, bar service, and panoramic upper-level views, they became a signature amenity of the train and a favorite among travelers and railfans alike.
No other Amtrak train offered anything comparable.
