The Superliner II Transition Sleeper is one of the most essential cars in Amtrak’s long-distance fleet, serving as the critical link between single-level head-end equipment and Superliner passenger consists. These unique cars combine crew sleeping accommodations with a full-height Superliner vestibule, allowing seamless transitions between baggage cars, diners, and the bi-level fleet. Prototype Background
Built by Bombardier in the mid-1990s as part of the Superliner II order, Transition Sleepers replaced earlier converted heritage dorms and became standard equipment on nearly every long-distance Superliner train. The single-level end houses crew dormitory space, while the bi-level end connects directly to Superliner coaches, sleepers, diners, and lounges.
These cars remain in service today and are found on routes including the Coast Starlight, Southwest Chief, Empire Builder, California Zephyr, and others.
