Denver & Rio Grande Western L-131 2-8-8-2 (Road Numbers 3600–3609)
The mighty D&RGW L-131 Class 2-8-8-2 represented the pinnacle of Rio Grande’s articulated steam power. Built by Alco in 1928, these massive locomotives were purpose-designed to conquer the steep mountain grades of the Rockies, hauling tonnage over Tennessee Pass, Soldier Summit, and beyond. With their long Vanderbilt tenders, skyline casings, and distinctive Elesco feedwater heaters, the L-131s stood as an unmistakable symbol of Rio Grande strength and engineering.
We brought these giants to life in O Scale a few years back, and they quickly became some of the most loved models we’ve ever offered. Now, for the first time, the L-131 arrives in HO Scale, crafted in Lifetime Brass with all the same attention to detail and fidelity that made the O Scale version such a standout.
