Sunset Models 3rd Rail “Golden Standard” Series
Seaboard Air Line R-1 and Baltimore & Ohio KB-1 2-6-6-4s
More than 40 years after Sunset Models first offered these remarkable locomotives in HO Scale, the powerful Seaboard Air Line R-1 and Baltimore & Ohio KB-1 2-6-6-4s return as premium O Scale 2 Rail and 3 Rail brass models in the Golden Standard Series.
Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1935, Seaboard’s five Class R-1 locomotives Nos. 2500–2504, were designed as fast, modern articulateds for heavy freight service. Their 69-inch drivers, large boilers, and simple-expansion machinery gave them the combination of speed and power needed for Seaboard’s mainline freight assignments. They were also used in passenger and expedited service when operating demands required it.
In 1947, all five R-1s were sold to the Baltimore & Ohio during a period of motive-power shortages. The B&O reclassified them as Class KB-1 and renumbered the locomotives 7700–7704. Their careers on the B&O were relatively brief, but they added one of the most distinctive articulated designs in American railroading to the railroad’s already impressive steam roster.
