EMD CF7
Sunset Models 3rd Rail proudly introduces the EMD CF7 to O Scale, faithfully reproducing one of the most successful locomotive rebuilding programs in American railroad history. Between 1970 and 1978, Santa Fe's Cleburne, Texas shops transformed 233 aging F3, F7, and F9 cab units into versatile road-switchers built for branch line service, local freights, yard duty, and secondary mainline operations.
Throughout the eight-year rebuilding program, the CF7 continually evolved. Early locomotives featured the distinctive rounded cab, while later rebuilds introduced the familiar angular ("Topeka") cab, along with changes to the side sill design and other spotting features. Sunset Models is proud to offer both cab styles, allowing modelers to accurately recreate CF7s from every era of production and nearly every major operator that rostered these remarkable locomotives.
Following retirement from the Santa Fe, CF7s found second careers on regional railroads, short lines, industrial railroads, and even Amtrak, remaining in service for decades. Their unique appearance and incredible longevity have made them favorites among railfans and model railroaders alike.
