Missouri Pacific Alco RS-3
O Scale by Sunset Models 3rd Rail
Classic Blue & White and Jenks Blue (GP12) Schemes Offered
The Missouri Pacific Railroad relied heavily on its RS-3 fleet for road, local, and branchline service across the system, making these locomotives a familiar sight from the 1950s through the Jenks modernization era. Delivered new in the railroad’s striking blue-and-white scheme, Missouri Pacific RS-3s later evolved through rebuild programs that aligned them visually and operationally with the railroad’s GP12 fleet.
Sunset Models now brings these iconic Mopac road switchers to O Scale, offering both as-delivered Classic RS-3sand Jenks Blue rebuilds, allowing modelers to accurately represent multiple eras of Missouri Pacific diesel operation.
Prototype Background
Missouri Pacific RS-3s were delivered in the early 1950s and quickly became versatile performers, handling everything from yard switching to mainline freight. As the railroad modernized under the Jenks program, some units were rebuilt and renumbered, receiving the famous Jenks Blue paint and mechanical updates that aligned them with GP12 standards. While retaining their RS-3 appearance, these rebuilds took on new identities—both visually and sonically.
One standout survivor, MP 4502, remains preserved today at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, serving as a tangible reminder of the railroad’s classic diesel era.
