Sunset Models 3rd Rail “Golden Standard” Series
New York Central NE-2a and Boston & Albany NE-2b 2-6-6-2 Mallets
Sunset Models 3rd Rail proudly introduces the New York Central Class NE-2a and Boston & Albany Class NE-2b 2-6-6-2 Mallets to O Scale as part of our premium Golden Standard Series. These models will feature true-scale proportions, lifetime-quality brass construction, and accurate railroad-specific detailing.
Built by ALCO’s Schenectady Works during the early 1910s, these powerful articulated locomotives were designed for demanding freight assignments over territory where steep grades and sharp curves placed conventional locomotives at a disadvantage. Their compound articulated design combined substantial tractive effort with the flexibility needed for the difficult operating conditions around Albany and across western Massachusetts.
The New York Central’s Class NE-2a consisted of 25 locomotives numbered 1375–1399, constructed in 1911. The closely related Boston & Albany Class NE-2b locomotives followed shortly afterward and were assigned to heavy freight service over the B&A. The railroad’s articulated locomotives were particularly associated with freight movements from the Connecticut River Valley and over the grades of the Berkshire route.
Rather than combining several visually different subclasses, the Sunset Models offering concentrates on these two closely related groups. Each railroad will have a consistent locomotive and tender configuration, with no detail variations between individual road numbers within that offering.
