Southern Pacific’s P-8, P-10, P-13, and P-14 class 4-6-2 Pacifics were mainstays of passenger service from the 1920s through the postwar era. The P-8s and P-10s handled locals and mail trains across SP’s vast network, recognized by their skyline casings and classic Vanderbilt tenders.
The later P-14s brought subtle refinements and greater range, famously assigned to SP’s Sunbeam service between Houston and Dallas on the Texas lines. These versatile Pacifics bridged the gap between heavyweight elegance and streamlined speed. The humble P-13 as well, were assigned to the earlier Hustler passenger trains along with occasional service on the Sunbeam.
