Chesapeake & Ohio “Allegheny” (H‑8) – The Ultimate Steam Power.
The C&O Allegheny, a 2‑6‑6‑6 behemoth built by Lima between 1941 and 1948, stands among the most powerful steam locomotives ever. Designed to haul massive coal drags over the rugged Allegheny Mountains, it delivered up to 7,500 drawbar horsepower and weighed nearly 1.2 million pounds with its tender, earning a reputation comparable to, and sometimes exceeding, Union Pacific’s Big Boy. A total of 60 Alleghenies were produced, with only two—Nos. 1601 and 1604, surviving into preservation. Notably, No. 1601 resides indoors at The Henry Ford Museum, while No. 1604 is displayed at the B&O Railroad Museum. Capable of hauling 11,500-ton coal trains over steep grades, the H‑8’s dual sets of six driving wheels and massive firebox were engineering marvels—made possible by its three-axle trailing truck. Though their reign was relatively short, from the early 1940s until 1956. Alleghenies left an indelible mark on American steam history. As diesel power swept in, these giants were retired, but not forgotten.
