Sunset Models 3rd Rail O Scale Timken Four Aces/NP A Class/DL&W Pocono

Built in 1930 by ALCO for the Timken Roller Bearing Company, the “Four Aces” No. 1111 was America’s first steam locomotive equipped with all sealed roller bearings—a revolutionary leap forward in low-friction technology. It performed demonstration runs across the country, pulling freight and passenger trains on major railroads, and was later sold to Northern Pacific as A‑1 No. 2626, continuing its legacy in both coal- and oil-fired versions.

The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad (DL&W) sought to give its new locomotives a unique identity and chose the name “Poconos,” inspired by the mountain range the railroad traversed. Initially conceived for passenger service, these engines were built with 73-inch driving wheels and delivered a tractive effort of 64,500 pounds—ideal for high-speed operations.

Beginning in 1929, the DL&W turned to ALCO for a new series of “Pocono” locomotives better suited to freight service. A total of thirty engines were delivered, numbered 1601 through 1620 (designated Class Q-2) and 1621 through 1630 (Class Q-3). These freight-specific Poconos featured slightly smaller 70-inch drivers and a higher tractive effort of 71,600 pounds, making them well-suited to hauling heavy loads across the railroad’s demanding mountain grades.

Sunset Models / 3rd Rail revived this historic icon with unmatched craftsmanship in O scale brass. The re-run includes:

  • Both Timken polished metal and Northern Pacific service (coal and oil) versions

  • Faithful details like lighted backhead gaugesoperating turret and tender hatches, and the unique “Four Aces” sand dome artwork.

  • Smooth can-motor power, directional lighting, rail-sound options, and finely crafted tender trucks.

The initial release flew off shelves—only 40 Timken, four NP coal, and 20 NP oil versions—and was lauded by hobbyists as “detailed and sharp-looking,” earning “goose bumps” status (ogrforum.com).

Now, we’re thrilled to offer this historic marvel again. Whether you’re drawn to the shine of innovation or the timeless power of classic NP steam, this re-run brings one of America’s most legendary locomotives back to life for your roster.
