Sunset Models 3rd Rail’s GS-4 No. 4449 is a faithful, lovingly engineered O-scale reproduction of one of the most photographed and beloved steam locomotives in American railroading. Built by Lima in 1941, the GS-4 combined streamlined Art-Deco styling with cross-country power, but its second life as the face of the American Freedom Train made it a national symbol.
Our model is offered in two commemorative presentations: the American Freedom Train Bicentennial scheme, a striking red, white, and blue finish capturing 4449’s 1975–76 role, and for the first time ever, the Amtrak-patched tender variant, reflecting the locomotive’s later excursion appearances with a tender carrying Amtrak identification. Both versions are finished and detailed to museum standards, with crisp paint, correct lettering, and the subtle weathering options you expect for display or operation.
Inside, the model is engineered for reliable, prototypical operation. Full brass construction, precision gearing, sprung drivers and tender trucks, operating sand and turret hatches, and a fully detailed backhead provide realism at every angle. Electrically, the GS-4 is ready for modern control systems: 3-rail ERR CRUISE/TMCC compatible with Legacy and DCS, and 2-rail Tsunami sound, plus the optional Blunami upgrade for collectors who want a blended digital sound experience like none other.
